The Azolla outbreak this year is the worst I can remember in the 20+ years I have lived here. No doubt people are wondering why not more has been done to clean it up. The Harvester is in need of hull repairs and as a result is unavailable. The work is planned and will begin when the lake level reaches a point where we can safely remove the Harvester. The goal is to have it back in the water ready to go by April 1.

While waiting for that we have also inquired about having someone come in and remove the Azolla for us. Aquatic Environments Inc was contacted and provided a written proposal. The cost was in excess of $42,000 for less than one months work. That is not a realistic possibility so we are looking at other possible solutions. One is the idea of a skimmer to clean the surface of the water. A prototype will be constructed and tested and we will see where that takes us.

Need for Communications Manager

The POA needs a communications manager. We want to do a better job of communicating with our members this year, and we need a person who is willing to spend a few hours per week to manage that effort. The person should have good computer and communications skills plus a very basic knowledge of web site issues. A willingness and ability to learn is important. Clearlake Oaks County Water District forms rate committee; public meetings planned

CLEARLAKE OAKS, Calif. – The Clearlake Oaks County Water District has formed a Rate Review Committee to discuss the “State of the District”

and appropriate rate levels for water and sewer services.

The public is encouraged to bring questions and/or comments to the first meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 29, at the Lake Village Estates Clubhouse, 400 Sulphur Bank Road, Clearlake Oaks.

An additional meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 12, 2012.

Bernie Bielenberg

Bernie Bielenberg passed away, peacefully, on November 17th, at home, with his family around him.

There will be a memorial, at the Keys Club, 12980 Lakeland Street, in Clearlake Oaks (off of Highway 20) on Sunday, Dec 4th, at 2:00 pm. Please, if you have any momentos or fond memories you wish to share about Bernie, there will be time to do so. Please share as we will celebrate Bernie’s life. Bernie volunteered on the POA board for several years.

The club and the family and friends will be supplying a ham, cake and some deli trays, but if you want to bring a side dish to share, feel free to do so.

Robert 'Bob' Summerrill, 1926-2011

Robert “Bob” Summerrill died on Saturday, October 26, 2011. He was 84 years old.

Robert Lynn “Bob” Summerrill was born in Watervliet, Michigan on Nov. 6, 1926. He passed away in St. Helena, California on Oct. 26, 2011, just days short of his 85th birthday.

His early years were spent with his family moving from Michigan to Ohio, to New Mexico and then to California. He graduated from Fremont High School in Oakland where he excelled in wrestling, receiving the highest Bay Area award.

He was offered a scholarship to U.C. Berkeley to play football, but chose instead to join the Navy during WWII. The next two years he spent on the USS Palawan in the Pacific as an Electrician’s Mate.

Bob was a builder. His life was spent organizing and building power plants, freezer plants, hospitals and other commercial and industrial projects throughout California. He was a proud member of the International Plumbers and Pipefitters Union for 55 years and served as their apprentice teacher for 20 years.

After his retirement in 1989, he moved to Lake County. He helped organize the property owners in the Clearlake Oaks Keys and encouraged them to become a community of active volunteers. He also spearheaded the design and purchase of the first spray boat system and worked to acquire a harvester to aid in the yearly clean-up of algae.

During his presidency of the P.O.A. he assisted in the fight against the construction of the geothermal power plant on Clear Lake. He served on the board of the Clearlake Oaks County Water District and was president of the Board of Vector Control of Lake County for 10 years. In all of his volunteer activism, he was widely respected and he will be dearly missed.

Bob deeply loved his family and especially enjoyed their annual camping and fishing trips to Eagle Lake.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Marian; his daughter, Bobbie; sons Steven (Gayle) and Michael; grandsons Brandon and Ryan (Kristen) and great-grandsons Hudson and Nolan; sister, Joyce; brother, Joseph; and several nieces and nephews.

There will be a private family service at the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery in Gustine.

A public memorial service will be at the Clearlake Keys Club, 12980 Lakeland Street (County Road 210E), Clearlake Oaks, on Saturday, Nov. 12, at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests any donations be made to the Clark’s Island fund. Please make all checks payable to the County of Lake, with “Clarks Island/Bob Summerrill” noted on the memo line, mailed to Administrative Office, Attn: Kathy Barnwell, 255 N. Forbes St., Lakeport, CA 95453
